Sometimes a composer knows exactly what instruments and voices should go with a particular piece. More often, a composer is given the list of musicians first, and must make the right music it work with the available forces. This means every opportunity is a unique challenge, and no combination is too strange.

There was a time that it felt like I needed to post my music to all of the streaming platforms in order to have any chance of becoming visible. But it turned out that the firehose of music, together with the lack of good discovery mechanisms, meant there was effectively no way to harness modern streaming platforms for an artist like me. Meanwhile, these services were all making money from my music (by selling advertising) without compensating me even so much as a single penny.
